Does It Matter What We Call God?

by – Mary A. LaClair

Let the name of God not be profaned or adulterated as salt which loses it flavor by mixing with  other things.

Leaders in the PCUSA church had better get it right and stop setting a bad example.

Is the world supposed to influence the church; or is the church supposed to influence the world?   I think PCUSA and similar churches can see another mass exodus comparable to the mass exit over same sex marriages in these same old mainline churches.

Local pastors under leadership of churches of this kind, if they don’t want to scatter and lose their flock, should seriously consider going independent. Better to please God rather than man.                                                                          name is Lincoln

Over the years people have told me they think as long as their intent is to talk to the Creator, that God honors their intent and it doesn’t matter what we call Him.

As long as the image is right in their own minds, “What does it matter?”, they ask.

How would you react if you were the one being addressed? Would you care, indeed would you even answer, if you were called by someone else’s name? You would, in effect, not even listen because it would not get your attention.

Yet, in spite of this, some people think it is merely their own personal belief that counts.

Thus, they are actually putting more faith in their own thoughts…. than they are putting faith in God’s thoughts. And this is being done in some churches! Well, God understands, they may continue… trying to get God to think the way they think instead of the other way around.   Wait, isn’t that manipulating God…?

Apparently the PCUSA does not know who their God is. But we should know.

FROM: Gen 1:3-26

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light

And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.”

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.”

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation:

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky

And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures,

And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,

 John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. NIV

John 1:14    The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. NIV

Deut 4:24   “For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. “NKJV

When God speaks to the churches, here is something He saya:

Matt 5:13   “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”   NIV

How does salt loose its flavor? Salt can lose its flavor if it is mixed with other impurities; if it dissolves and re-crystalizes with other elements; if one’s own taste buds are not working; and, if taste buds are in need of healing. In other words, it loses its flavor by adding things to it; mixing it with other things; watering it down; adulterating it with other things.

Some churches are committing spiritual adultery by trying to mix two opposing religions together. They each think they will convince the other. But who knows who will convince whom. And what does God say about salt which loses it flavor? Note well, it is the churches which He compares to salt losing its saltiness.

Sounds like dire consequences. We should consider what God cares about how He is addressed. It is possible to be sincere yet be mistaken and God does not take that lightly. We should know Him, not pretend we know Him.

Here is a quote from Rev. Billy Graham:

“As a matter of fact, God takes His name very seriously, and the Ten Commandments include the command that we must not take the name of the Lord in vain. We are to use the names God has given for Himself, and we are to recognize that God takes His name seriously because He desires to be rightly known by His human creatures. We cannot truly know Him if we do not even know His name.”

Perhaps we should see what else God tells us in Scripture about how He feels about how He is addressed.

A computer search was done in the NIV for “my Name” (case sensitive) and it resulted in the following list:

Ex 23:21; 2 Sam 7:13; 1 Kings 5:5; 1 Kings 8:16; 1 Kings 8:18; 1 Kings 8:19; 1 Kings 9:3; 1 Kings 9:7; 1 Kings 11:36; 2 Kings 21:4; 2 Kings 21:7; 2 Kings 23:27; 1 Chron 22:8; 1 Chron 22:10; 1 Chron 28:3; 2 Chron 6:5; 2 Chron 6:6; 2 Chron 6:8; 2 Chron 6:9; 2 Chron 7:16; 2 Chron 7:20; 2 Chron 33:7; Neh 1:9; Jer 7:10; Jer 7:11; Jer 7:12;Jer 7 :14; Jer 7:30; Jer 25:29; Jer 32:34; Jer 34:15;        (printed out below in end notes)

In these Scriptures God talks about how He feels about His Name. Some of these are quite interesting, some revelatory, and some even surprising, to say the least.

To save you the time and effort of looking up each of these Scriptures, end notes below are a sample of how He reveals what His Name means to Him; and the benefits we may receive by honoring Him by His correct Name….the Name He prefers and the Name and titles which will get His attention.

Additionally, there are some very beautiful sites on the names of God in the links below.

Names, plural? Well if you are a Mom or a Dad, you have several names to which you reply: Honey (hopefully), Dad, Grampa, Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Uncle, but if you call out Grandma and expect to get Dad’s attention…. you get the idea, some names are titles.

Deut 6:13-15  You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name.  You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are all around you  (for the Lord your God is a jealous God among you), lest the anger of the Lord your God be aroused against you and destroy you from the face of the earth. NKJV

Heb 1:1-3   In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,  but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.  NIV

The universe made through the Son. The SON is the Creator. The Son is Jesus — NOT Allah. Refer back to John 1:1

Heb 1:8   But about the Son he says,”Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,” NIV

Here the Son is called GOD   Allah has no Son. Allah is not God.

Isa 40:28

The everlasting God, the Lord ,

The Creator of the ends of the earth, NKJV

Here we see that The Lord is God the Creator –

Rom 10:9-10  That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  NIV

Jesus Christ is Lord – He is the Creator NOT Allah

Ex 20:5“…you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,…” NKJV

“…In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths…” Prov 3:5-6 – acknowledge allah? How foolish! Allah is NOT the God of the Bible, he is the god of the Koran.

Let the name of God not be profaned or adulterated as salt which loses it flavor by mixing with other things.

Again, Local pastors under leadership of churches of this kind, if they don’t want to scatter and lose their flock, should seriously consider going independent. Better to please God rather than man.

On the other hand, the outgrowth of evangelical churches taking their places is encouraging.

END NOTES   —————————————————

End Notes:   To save you reading time, a brief summary (eliminating duplicates) of some Scriptures from the list contained in the above article is right here:

Exodus 23:21    “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.   Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him.   If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. …  Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you,   and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span. NIV

2 Samuel 7:13  ” He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.  I will be his father, and he will be my son. ‘” NIV

1 Kings 8:18  “My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel.   But the Lord said to my father David, ‘Because it was in your heart to build a temple for my Name, you did well to have this in your heart.  Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, who is your own flesh and blood — he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’ NIV

People of old fell because they mixed with the heathen…and embraced other gods. Allah is another god, he is neither Creator God, nor the God of Israel.

NKJV

1 Kings 9:7

“But if you or your sons turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,  then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples.  And though this temple is now imposing, all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’ People will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them — that is why the Lord brought all this disaster on them.'” NIV

2 Chronicles 7:16  “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.  I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. NIV

Nehemiah 1:9   “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,  but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’ NIV

Jeremiah 7:10  “‘Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, “We are safe” — safe to do all these detestable things?  Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 34:15  You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name. But now you have turned around and profaned my Name;

God definitely thinks His Name is important.

Referring to God as merely a prophet, or calling Him Allah is an instance of profaning His name, and I think He will take this is Lincoln

Getting it correct is important. Let’s see what the New Testament says that Name is:

John 8:24  Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” NKJV

By Name, this is JESUS speaking of Himself, telling us it is important to know Who He is, who JESUS is, and He is NOT Allah, He is Jesus the Christ, the Word of God – Creator God.

John 8:28-30  “Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.  And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”  As He spoke these words, many believed in Him.” NKJV

It was JESUS who was lifted up on the cross, and when JESUS is lifted up by Name in our praise to God, God reveals more and more to us about Himself.

John 4:25-26  The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he.” NIV

Matt 16:20   Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. NIV

Here, Jesus acknowledges that He Jesus, not Allah is the Christ.

Isa 43:15   I am the Lord , your Holy One,

The Creator of Israel, your King.”   NKJV

The Creator: the LORD, the Holy One, is the God of Israel, and the God of Israel is NOT Allah, the Creator is not Allah, Allah is not God.

Allah is NEITHER the God of the Bible and NOR the God of Israel, he is the god of the Koran.

Isa 54:5   For your Maker is your husband,

The Lord of hosts is His name;

And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;

He is called the God of the whole earth. NKJV

Your Maker, the LORD, your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth, is the God of Israel, and the God of Israel is NOT Allah.

Acts 4:10-12   then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.  He is”‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” NIV

John 16:24  Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. NIV

Ask the Father to reveal Jesus to you and begin a new journey with God that will never end…

  1. “God”, “LORD”, and “Lord” are all titles for Him, and not names. Everything you said is perfectly accurate – except you (and most ‘Christians’) are not using His NAME either. The comment above about the capitalisation is referring to how translators chose to differentiate between the “acceptable” terms for God that the Jews used INSTEAD of his name. They forbid speaking the actual name of God (The name He commanded them to call him- YHWH, or most agreed pronunciation of Yahweh) and used substitution words instead. (To avoid ‘accidentally’ using His name in vain) For all the reasons you stated above, according to every single scripture you listed, I believe he wants us to love his name and call on his name and praise his name. Since He said there is power in His NAME (not his titles) I think we should take him at his word and use his actual name. If you used the NKJV, read the preface to it. It explains a little about the substitutions. The Holman Christian Standard version goes into more detail and uses the actual name in places where it is obviously supposed to be his actual name. I am honestly not trying to be critical because I agree with you 100%, but it is a little hard to take a lesson like that from someone who does not actually know his name any more than the people that are being criticized. The information is out there and if you really mean what you say, I pray that you let go of tradition long enough to search for the truth. Yahweh will bless every effort we all make to know Him better.

    • Thanks for your reply (<: Here it is JESUS IS LORD in Holman Christian Standard version

Notice here that the hand of Jesus and the hand of the Father are one and the same…??
The Father gives us to Jesus and “No one will snatch them out of MY HAND” He tells us; followed by “No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand”…. Well, whose hand is it….Jesus and the Father are one.

      Name of God? JESUS !!

  2. I noticed on several biblical quotations; even in the NKJV, the name “Lord” was not printed in all “caps” which should be the case in several of the quotations. Several versions of the Bible, including the NKJV write the Name “LORD” (all caps) rather than “Lord” in order to distinguish between two Hebrew words. LORD is translated from YHWH (known as the Tetragrammaton) and Lord is translated from Adonai, meaning master. This distinction is important and word be very much related to your topic about the Nane of God. I hope this helps. I enjoyed your article.

  3. Mateen Elass, a former Muslim who now works with a ministry for Arab-speaking individuals called Voice of the Truth, called the event one which “denied the gospel and lordship of Jesus Christ.”
Elass criticized the PCUSA for inviting “a practicing Muslim … to lead the worship of Christians,” and pointed out that Said asked “Allah to convert the assembly” during his prayers.
“Praying to Allah … he was pleading that the Presbyterians gathered there would be converted to the straight path, i.e., become Muslims,” Elass wrote in his blog.which I think should be read:
